The echidna is one of only two egg-laying mammals, or monotremes, native to Australia and nearby regions. Despite their ancient lineage—echidnas have remained largely unchanged for millions of years—they are skilled diggers and insectivores, using their long, sticky tongues to extract ants and termites from deep within mounds and soil. Their coat of sharp spines serves as effective defense, and when threatened, they curl into a tight ball or wedge themselves into crevices, presenting only their formidable quills to predators. Solitary and shy, echidnas are rarely seen but are iconic symbols of Australian wildlife.
