Akhenaten was one of ancient Egypt's most unconventional pharaohs, ruling during the 18th Dynasty (circa 1353–1336 BCE). He is famous for attempting a religious revolution, promoting the worship of the Aten (sun disk) as supreme deity and moving the capital from Thebes to a new city he built, Akhetaten. Despite his dramatic reforms and distinctive artistic patronage that introduced new naturalism to Egyptian portraiture, his reign was ultimately brief and much of his legacy was deliberately erased by successors who restored traditional polytheistic worship.
