Kateri Tekakwitha (1656–1680) was a Haudenosaunee (Iroquois Confederacy) woman of mixed French and Mohawk heritage who became the first Native American saint canonized by the Roman Catholic Church. Born near present-day Fonda, New York, she survived a smallpox outbreak in childhood that scarred her face and weakened her vision. Despite family opposition, she converted to Christianity and later joined a Catholic mission community at Kahnawake near Montreal, where she lived a life of remarkable spiritual devotion. She died young—just 24—and her reputation for holiness and miraculous intercessions grew steadily after her death, leading eventually to her canonization in 2023.
